| WARNING: Hard Mode Guide Only
This guide covers Hard Mode difficulty and the optimal, intended ways to win. |
Pewter City Gym: Brock (Click to Expand)
- Type Specialty: Rock
- Badge: Boulder Badge
- Difficulty: Hard Mode
Brock's Team
| Icon | Pokémon | Level | Item | Ability | Moveset |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geodude (M) | 15 | Custap Berry | Sturdy |
| |
| Zubat | 15 | Black Sludge | Infiltrator |
| |
| Vulpix (F) | 15 | Eviolite | Drought |
| |
| Onix (M) | 15 | Leftovers | Rock Head |
|
Note: Brock's Pokémon do not have EV investments.
Optimal Strategy
Preparation
- Starter Choice: Pick Bulbasaur to guarantee access to Sleep Powder and immunity to Toxic.
- Second Starter: Aim for a Water-type result in the Second Starter Personality Quiz. Special Attackers are preferred to bypass Vulpix's Will-O-Wisp.
- Wild Catches:
Battle Tactics
- Vs Geodude: Lead with Bulbasaur. Use Sleep Powder immediately, then faint it with a Grass move. This prevents Geodude from setting up Stealth Rock.
- Vs Zubat & Vulpix: Switch to your Water-type starter or Pikachu.
- Vs Onix: Use Sleep Powder again, then follow up with Grass moves or switch to Mankey to use a Fighting-type move.
Alternative Path: You can pick Squirtle and catch an Oddish in the forest for a similar strategy, but Bulbasaur remains the optimal choice for Kanto.
Cerulean City Gym: Misty (Click to Expand)
- Type Specialty: Water
- Badge: Cascade Badge
- Difficulty: Hard Mode
Misty's Team
| Icon | Pokémon | Level | Item | Ability | Moveset |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Psyduck (M) | 25 | Eviolite | Swift Swim |
| |
| Goldeen | 25 | Eviolite | Lightning Rod |
| |
| Gyarados | 25 | Leftovers | Intimidate |
| |
| Staryu | 25 | Eviolite | Natural Cure |
| |
| Starmie | 25 | Life Orb | Natural Cure |
|
Optimal Strategy
Preparation
- Grass Coverage: You need Ivysaur or Gloom to handle the early threats.
- Electric Speed: Catch a Yamper past Nugget Bridge (Route 24) to evolve into Boltund.
- Why? Boltund has a faster Speed BST than Starmie, making it superior to Pikachu for this fight.
- Intimidate Cycling: It is recommended to catch Skiddo and Ekans (with Intimidate) on Route 4, or Luxio (with Intimidate) on Route 5.
Battle Tactics
- Vs Psyduck & Goldeen: Lead with your Grass-type. Use Sleep Powder + Grass moves on Psyduck immediately to prevent Rain Dance. These two should not cause much trouble.
- Vs Gyarados: This is a major threat. Cycle your Ekans and Luxio to stack Intimidate drops, lowering its Attack by at least 2 stages.
- Once its Attack is low, inflict Status (Paralysis or Poison).
- Finish it off with an Electric-type (Pikachu is safe here once Gyarados is weakened).
- Vs Starmie: Use Boltund. Its Electric move might not OHKO, but the recoil from Starmie's Life Orb combined with your damage will faint it eventually.
Vermilion City Gym: Lt. Surge (Click to Expand)
- Type Specialty: Electric
- Badge: Thunder Badge

Optimal Strategy
Preparation
- Immunity is Key: Bring Grass and Ground-type mons to take less/no damage from electric moves.
- Recommended Pokémon:
- Chinchou / Lanturn (Route 11): Highly Recommended. Its Volt Absorb ability heals it when hit by Electric moves, and it resists Surf. Using Lanturn trivializes this fight.
- Sandshrew: The best wild Ground-type encounter available at this stage.
- Venusaur: The best Grass-type option for resisting Electric damage.
Notes
- This is a fairly easy gym compared to others. You can have at least 2 electric-immune mons, so your only problem might be Magnemite.
- You can deal with it in a lot of ways, but simple solutions are using Poison-type mon and using multi-attack moves like Fury Swipes.
- So just use Lanturn, and you will have 0 problem.
